Belarus, Russia to submit Zapovednoye Poozerye Protected Area for inclusion in WNRB

MINSK, 29 November (BelTA) – Belarus and Russia intend to submit the Zapovednoye Poozerye Protected Area for inclusion in the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves (WNRB), Belarusian First Deputy Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Minister Iya Malkina noted at the expert and media seminar dedicated to topical issues of environmental safety in the Belarus-Russia Union State and Belarus-Russia cooperation in environmental protection, BelTA informs.

“Biological and landscape diversity are among the avenues of Belarus-Russia cooperation. During the third session of the CIS Interstate Environmental Council, our countries signed an agreement to set up a protected area called Zapovednoye Poozerye. This document is meant to focus our joint effort on preserving unique landscapes and will encourage our teamwork on submitting the Zapovednoye Poozerye Protected Area for inclusion in the UNESCO WNRB,” Iya Malkina remarked.

For Belarus and Russia, this is the first experience in such cooperation, she added. “We hope that the initiative will be a success,” the first deputy minister emphasized.

The expert and media seminar is designed to analyze and discuss the topical issues of Belarus-Russia cooperation in environmental protection, environmental education, and exchange of experience in climate research. The seminar has brought together members of the House of Representatives of Belarus’ National Assembly, officials of the Union State Standing Committee, the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Ministry, the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, and experts in ecology and environmental protection. The event is organized by the Union State Standing Committee and the Belarus’ National Press Center in cooperation with the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Ministry.
