Belarus, Russia may sign visa recognition agreement by 2017 year-end

GRODNO, 30 October (BelTA) – An agreement on mutual visa recognition between Belarus and Russia may be signed before the end of the year, Chairman of the Council of the Republic’s permanent commission on international affairs and national security, Chairman of the Union State Parliamentary Assembly’s commission on foreign policy Sergei Rakhmanov told the media on 30 October, BelTA has learned.

On 30 October Grodno played host to a meeting of the Union State Parliamentary Assembly’s commission on foreign policy. The MPs discussed the coordination of actions of the states in foreign policy and reviewed the progress in the formation of the common migration space. “The common visa space was considered in detail. The two states are currently working on the corresponding agreement that will be ready for signing before the end of the year. All the pressing issues will be removed once the document is ratified,” said Sergei Rakhmanov.

According to him, the agreement will envisage not only the mutual recognition of visas, but also of other authorization documents, taking into account the events the countries will host in the near future, namely the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia and the 2019 Second European Games in Belarus.

“A wider range of issues proposed by Belarus is being considered as part of the document. They have been taken into account by our colleagues in Russia. The agreement will include all the aspects,” Sergei Rakhmanov stressed. He noted that this is part of the work to strengthen the Union State as an integration organization.

The MPs also discussed trade and economic cooperation prospects between Grodno Oblast and the regions of the Russian Federation. “The 5th Forum of the Regions of Belarus and Russia will be held in September 2018. We are working on the agenda of the forum. We want to fill it with matters of practical importance,” said Sergei Rakhmanov.

During the visit to Grodno Oblast the MPs got familiar with its economic and tourist potential.
