MINSK, 21 October (BelTA) – Belarus and Russia have made progress in abolishing roaming charges. The reduced mobile communication tariff system will be launched in a test mode on 1 November, Grigory Rapota, Secretary of State of the Belarus-Russia Union State, said at a press conference following the meeting of the High Level Group of the Council of Ministers of the Belarus-Russia Union State which took place online, TASS reports.

“There has been clear progress in what concerns roaming charges. On 1 November, the countries will start testing a new tariff system. This does not completely cancel the roaming tariffs, but significantly reduces their cost: from 30 to 1.5 cents,” Grigory Rapota said.

In his words, plans are in place to see how it will work, and then to further develop this topic towards the abolition of roaming charges. “All the mobile operators need to calculate their costs, ways of compensation for these costs. The progress, however, has already been made, and here we have to express gratitude to our communications ministers who have been working hard on the matter,” said Grigory Rapota.

Belarus and Russia have been working on the abolition of roaming charges in the Union State since 2017. The relevant roadmap was approved in December 2019.
