Belarus ready to help train Iraqi police personnel

MINSK, 26 January (BelTA) – Top officials of the Belarusian Internal Affairs Ministry met with a delegation of the Iraqi Ministry of Interior during the delegation’s visit to Belarus, BelTA has learned.

During the meeting Belarusian First Deputy Internal Affairs Minister, Chief of the Public Security Police Yuri Nazarenko stressed that the foreign policy Belarus pursues is traditionally inclined towards constructive cooperation with Middle East countries, in particular, with Iraq. “Unfortunately, the potential for bilateral interaction in law enforcement is far from fully utilized,” the official noted. “In turn, we are interested in establishing direct practical contacts. I hope our meeting will allow exchanging opinions about a broad range of matters, sketching out the main directions of mutually beneficial cooperation, and giving an impulse to bilateral ties.”

Belarus boasts extensive experience of training law enforcement personnel for foreign countries and is ready to help train personnel for Iraqi police units in a number of specializations. “We are confident that cooperation in this sphere can be promising and long-term. We will do what we can to organize education in accordance with high standards that meet all the modern requirements,” the Public Security Police chief underlined.

Brigadier General of Law Enforcement Forces of the Iraqi Ministry of Interior Jabbar Al-Tamimi thanked Belarusian colleagues for the hospitality, for the readiness to advance mutually beneficial partnership. The officer outlined the main interests of the Iraqi Ministry of Interior, which include studying the Belarusian experience of public order enforcement during mass events and the procurement of equipment and technical resources.

In a constructive dialogue the sides discussed aspects of joint work. Afterwards the delegation visited a riot police base in Minsk where members of the delegation were made familiar with the tactics Belarusian riot police units employ to counteract mass riots. Hardware and special gear were demonstrated.
