Belarus ready to help Russia finish building Vostochny cosmodrome

MINSK, 21 February (BelTA) – Belarus is ready to help Russia finish building the Vostochny cosmodrome. Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko noted he had discussed the matter with President of Russia Vladimir Putin as he met with Governor of Russia’s Arkhangelsk Oblast Igor Orlov on 21 February, BelTA has learned.

Aleksandr Lukashenko said: “I told him [Vladimir Putin] about meeting with [Roscosmos CEO Dmitry] Rogozin and the construction of the Vostochny cosmodrome. I told the president: it is your construction project, you check it all the time. So, keep in mind that our minister and Rogozin have flown there or will fly there. And certainly it is necessary to finish building the Vostochny cosmodrome fast. When he was here, Dmitry Rogozin asked me for assistance. He wanted to borrow Belarusian specialists.”

The head of state stressed that Belarus has an advantage because the country has not allowed major civil engineering companies to fall apart since the Soviet times. “We didn’t split them into small companies for the sake of some market competition. And it was worth it,” he said.

“Now if we come to terms on Vostochny, we can redeploy 2-3 construction enterprises over there, which will be able to build homes and industrial facilities using the turn-key principle. Maybe we should. Because the president said they need help a lot and need to build the Vostochny cosmodrome fast. He says the project will have the second stage and the third one,” the Belarusian leader said.

The Vostochny cosmodrome is located near the city of Tsiolkovsky, 45km north of the town of Svobodny and the military cosmodrome Svobodny in Amur Oblast in the Russian Far East.
