Belarus’ President meets with Supreme Court Chairman

MINSK, 8 May (BelTA) – Belarus’ President Alexander Lukashenko has held a working meeting with Chairman of Belarus’ Supreme Court Valentin Sukalo on 8 May to discuss the state of things and ways to improve the country’s judiciary system, BelTA has learnt.

“In the run-up to such meetings I carefully study the work of branches of power. I cannot say that I am unhappy with something. Nevertheless, you know better what kind of problems our courts face and what tasks are to be addressed,” the head of state said.

Alexander Lukashenko asked to update him on some high-profile criminal cases in which he kept track of the quality of preliminary investigation. “I would like to hear how such cases are handled. I want updates on the progress made. There are always some subtle issues. I would like you to inform me about them in order to avoid mishandlings, in particular, on the part of those who are responsible for conducting pre-investigation probes and investigations. I would like to hear your general opinion about your major partners in court proceedings – the Investigation Committee, and the way the Interior Ministry, the KGB and the prosecutor’s office operate in a new environment. What are relations between them, what is missing if such issues arise?” the President outlined the topic of the discussion.

Apart from that, the head of state wanted to know how the construction of a new building of the Supreme Court in Minsk is proceeding. “What is the progress made? Will we be able to commission the Supreme Court building by 7 November, as we agreed?” the President asked.
