Belarus president concerned about terrorism activities in Dark Web

MINSK, 3 September (BelTA) – The fact that terrorism activities are moving into the Dark Web is a reason for concern. Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko made the relevant statement during the international conference held in Minsk on 3 September to discuss fight against terrorism, BelTA has learned.

Aleksandr Lukashenko stressed that the World Wide Web is now a big risk zone. The threats evolving in the cyberspace are transnational and clandestine.

“The fact that criminals are moving into the hidden network, the so-called Dark Web makes it difficult for governments and the private sector to control it. Terrorists actively use social websites for propaganda and for recruiting new followers. They actively use digital technologies to get funding. It represents yet another challenge for the global counterterrorism front,” Aleksandr Lukashenko believes.

“We’ve created this big and nice ‘toy’ and don’t know what to do with it now. To be exact, we know precisely what to do with it. But we don’t want to do what we understand and what we should do. As we create some ‘toy’, we have to understand that while it can be beneficial for the mankind – and the Internet is definitely beneficial on the one hand – we had to think about possible side effects,” the Belarusian leader stressed.

Aleksandr Lukashenko added that while creating the global network some parties intended to reap major benefits from it, including for the sake of spying.
