Belarus president calls for improving focus areas of power-wielding agencies

MINSK, 16 December (BelTA) – It is necessary to improve the focus areas in the operation of Belarusian power-wielding agencies. Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko made the statement during the government conference held on 16 December, BelTA has learned.

Alexander Lukashenko stressed that participants of the conference would have to discuss the state of security in Belarus as well as several matters concerning individual government agencies especially since a new chairman of the Investigation Committee had been appointed a short time before. “I would like to learn what is going on in the Investigation Committee from the committee’s point of view. The state secretary of the Security Council will have to report about the overall operation of the law enforcement block, about security matters, and about proposals to improve the focus areas of the power-wielding block,” stressed the head of state. “As far as I understand there are no problems with human resources in the power-wielding block and the law enforcement one. Everyone is working and there is no need for re-approval. Today they work just the way they did in the past.”

Alexander Lukashenko also underlined that participants of the government conference would have to exchange views on security matters. The President emphasized: “We must keep Ukraine’s situation in mind.” In his words, the fact that the police apprehends some shady people at the railway station indicates that relaxing is not an option.

During the government conference the head of the State Border Committee of Belarus is supposed to deliver a report about measures taken to reinforce the southern border. “Moreover, I would like to warn you that Ukraine’s agreement with the European Union comes into force on 1 January. Naturally the agreement stresses out not only Russia although concerns were also expressed earlier, more than a year ago. During the latest meeting the president of Russia pointed out that the agreement will come into force very soon. It will lead to certain risks for Russia, for Belarus, and for Kazakhstan. This is why we should be ready to discuss these matters. These three members of the Eurasian Economic Union plus Armenia and Kyrgyzstan will have to discuss these problems in advance with Ukraine. Because the problems will not go away by themselves,” stressed Alexander Lukashenko.

Alexander Lukashenko remarked that Belarus has its fair share of economic problems as it is but if the market is flooded with merchandise from the European Union that will be imported via Ukraine without customs duties, things will get worse fast. “This is why everything we’ve been doing to reinforce southern borders of our country from the point of view of security and economy has turned out to be necessary today. I would like to learn about progress in border reinforcement,” noted the President.
