MINSK, 26 May (BelTA) - At the 34th session of the UN Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice in Vienna, Belarus’ Permanent Representative to the International Organizations in Vienna Andrei Dapkiunas presented a joint statement on behalf of Belarus, Venezuela, Iran, China, Nicaragua, and Russia following the thematic forum titled as The Current Problems of International Criminal Cooperation and Justice, BelTA learned from the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The thematic forum and joint statement were initiated by Belarus. The authors of the statement emphasized the importance of the effective implementation of existing multilateral documents and expressed serious concern about the challenges hindering effective international cooperation in criminal justice and the application of international legal instruments.

“Unilateral coercive measures was named one of the main obstacles to effective cooperation. Within the thematic mandate of the commission, it was noted that such measures hinder the effective investigation of transnational criminal cases. National law enforcement agencies face difficulties in exchanging operational data, gathering evidence, conducting joint operations, recovering assets, and cooperating in extradition. These discriminatory measures undermine the implementation of relevant UN conventions, treaties on cooperation and mutual legal assistance in criminal cases, weaken the legal framework for international cooperation in criminal justice, and virtually allow many criminals to escape punishment,” the ministry noted.

Like-minded countries emphasized that in the context of a changing international geopolitical landscape, unilateral coercive measures can provoke confrontation from other countries, divert global attention from the fight against transnational crime and ultimately contribute to it.

The authors of the statement called for preventing the politicization of international anti-crime cooperation, including extradition, mutual legal assistance, and the activities of anti-crime organizations. Partner countries urged relevant international organizations and the global community to closely monitor, assess, and actively respond to the negative impact of unilateral coercive measures on international cooperation in combating crime.
