Belarus, Poland to draw up map of tourist sites at Augustow Canal

MINSK, 25 October (BelTA) - Belarus and Poland will draw up a single map of tourist sites at the Augustow Canal by the end of 2016. The agreement was reached during a meeting between Belarusian Deputy Sport and Tourism Minister Mikhail Portnoi and undersecretary of state at the Polish Ministry of Sport and Tourism Dawid Lasek, BelTA learned from the press service of the Sport and Tourism Ministry of Belarus.

Mikhail Portnoi and Dawid Lasek discussed the operation of tourist information centers, agro- and eco-estates and campsites in the two countries. The parties also agreed on a single map of tourist sites at the Augustow Canal by the end of 2016 and shared use of the tourist facilities restored in the border zone.

Dawid Lasek proposed to boost cooperation creating joint projects to advance the tourism potential of the two countries. Formats of cooperation can be varied: ranging from a common stand at international tourist expos to exchanging of information, including statistics. He conveyed appreciation from representatives of Polish travel agencies and Polish tourists for providing a visa-free entry to visit Augustow Canal Park and adjacent areas.

According to Dawid Lasek, it is now necessary to establish closer contacts between local authorities and business representatives in the border areas to promote mutual travel of citizens of Poland and Belarus. “We see Belarus as a priority partner with whom we have long-standing ties. Recently Bialystok has hosted a big economic forum. Representatives of the Polish business community noted the openness of Belarusian partners, the willingness to engage in dialogue and solve problems promptly and thoroughly, including in the field of tourism,” he said.

Mikhail Portnoi, for his part, suggested exchanging best practices in the field of statistics and tourism studies, and preparing normative legal acts in the field of tourism.
