Belarus parliament aims for observer status in Latin American Parliament

MINSK, 14 October (BelTA) – The Belarus parliament intends to acquire observer status in the Latin American Parliament. The statement was made by Vladimir Andreichenko, Chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus, as he met with Chairwoman of the Sverdlovsk Oblast Parliament Lyudmila Babushkina on 14 October, BelTA has learned.

Vladimir Andreichenko informed the Russian side about the Belarusian parliament’s fields of work, focusing on the development of international cooperation. He said that the Belarusian parliament has already acquired observer status in the interparliamentary assembly of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). “We are now working hard to acquire observer status in the Latin American Parliament. I think we will finish the work by late 2014 – early 2015 and will get the relevant status,” he said. Belarusian MPs intend to use parliamentary methods to advance trade and economic cooperation with Latin America.

The Chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus also remarked that the lower chamber of the Belarus parliament had set up over 50 working groups on cooperation with foreign parliaments. There are three interparliamentary commissions on cooperation with Ukraine, Armenia, and Syria. “Due to the well-known circumstances the operation of the interparliamentary commission on cooperation with Syria is on hold for now, however, a meeting with the ambassador of Syria may take place next week and this matter will be discussed then,” he said.
