Belarus, Order of Malta seek closer bilateral cooperation

MINSK, 26 April (BelTA) – Belarus and the Order of Malta confirmed their intention to intensify bilateral cooperation, Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei told media after his meeting with Grand Chancellor of the Order of Malta Albrecht von Boeselager on 25 April, BelTA has learned.

Vladimir Makei stressed that the parties discussed issues of bilateral relations, including some aspects related to the development of the regional situation. “We agreed that Belarus and the Order of Malta have promising and traditionally friendly relations and confirmed the intention to do more than what has already been achieved, continue searching for ways to intensify our cooperation in the areas of mutual interest,” he said.

The minister thanked the authorities of the Order of Malta for creative bilateral cooperation, the organization of various humanitarian projects in Belarus. This includes the supply of equipment and medicines for healthcare establishments, the organization of on-the-job training for Belarusian doctors abroad, and also a large-scale humanitarian assistance.

Vladimir Makei expressed confidence that joint efforts would help Belarus and the Order of Malta preserve the current level of cooperation and develop it further.

In turn, Albrecht von Boeselager thanked the minister for the opportunity to visit the country and share opinions on a number of issues. In his words, the principles of work of the Order of Malta are based on the Christian values and emphasized the readiness to work for the benefit of children that live on the territories affected by the Chernobyl accident. Besides, the Order also does much for the rehabilitation of disabled people and their integration into the society.

Grand Chancellor of the Order of Malta Albrecht von Boeselager is in Belarus on an official visit on 24-26 April. He has come to the country to take part in the events of the international conference on the 30th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster. On 26 April Albrecht von Boeselager is expected to meet with Belarus’ Prime Minister Andrei Kobyakov. The parties are set to sign a joint declaration on further cooperation.

The Grand Chancellor is Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Order.
