Belarus may further ease visa requirements in 2018

MINSK, 11 January (BelTA) – Belarus may take new steps to liberalize the visa regime in 2018, Belarus’ Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei told the media following the government conference held by the Belarusian head of state on 11 January to discuss ways to relax the country’s visa regulations, BelTA has learned.

“I do not rule out that this year, in the course of this year, relevant decisions may be adopted to further relax the visa requirements,” Vladimir Makei said.

He stressed that the state will not act hastily. “We will thoroughly consult with our neighbors, experts and will make informed and deliberate decisions,” the minister noted.

Vladimir Makei noted that the measures that Belarus has already adopted to ease the visa requirements have enabled to substantially increase the export of tourist services. For example, in Minsk alone it surged by35%. “The policy aimed at relaxing the visa requirements, which was endorsed by the head of state, with a view to the development of our tourism and business potential, is correct. It was decided to continue to move carefully in this direction, facilitate the conditions for visits of foreign citizens to Belarus,” the diplomat said.

At the meeting, the president stressed that Belarus’ visa policy should not create problems for other states. In particular, he instructed to settle the differences with Russia.
