Belarus, Iraq agree to bolster ties in industry, agriculture

MINSK, 9 April (BelTA) - Belarus and Iraq agreed to promote cooperation in industry, agriculture and humanitarian affairs, Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Belarus and Iraq Vladimir Makei and Ibrahim Al Jaafari said after the talks in Minsk, BelTA has learned.

According to the Belarusian minister, the parties discussed the entire range of bilateral relations and outlined a number of concrete steps to enhance cooperation.

Vladimir Makei noted that the political dialogue between Belarus and Iraq has intensified lately. "We agreed to continue and expand the high-level dialogue, with the focus on the implementation of joint trade and economic projects," the minister said. According to him, the development of trade, economic and investment cooperation were the key issues of the talks because the current level of trade does not match the potential of the two countries.

Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Belarus and Iraq Vladimir Makei and Ibrahim Al JaafariVladimir Makei considers it necessary to broaden and deepen the Belarusian-Iraqi trade and economic cooperation. He said that Belarusian industrial and agricultural enterprises are ready to work with Iraqi partners, and Belarus is willing to expand cooperation in the fields of education, healthcare and to host more students from Iraq.

For his part, Ibrahim Al Jaafari said that Iraq is also interested in expanding the cooperation in the aforementioned areas. "We hope for the development of bilateral cooperation in military, industrial and agricultural sectors, and in the humanitarian field," the Iraqi minister noted.

The parties signed a memorandum of understanding between the Ministry of Youth and Sport of Iraq and the Ministry of Sport and Tourism of Belarus on cooperation in the field of sport.
