Belarus invites South Korea to hold meeting of MPs at IPU Assembly in St. Petersburg

MINSK, 2 June (BelTA) – Vladimir Andreichenko, the Chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus, met with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of South Korea to Belarus Kim Yong Ho and suggested organizing a meeting of MPs of the two countries during the Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in St. Petersburg on 14-18 October, BelTA has learned.

According to Vladimir Andreichenko, there is a need to hold more high-level meetings in order to strengthen the mutually beneficial relations. “This year, the IPU Assembly will be hosted by St. Petersburg. During the assembly, we could arrange a meeting of delegations of our countries. This will be an important event in the bilateral relations,” said.

He drew attention to the fact that in February this year, Belarus and the Republic of Korea celebrated the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties. Vladimir Andreichenko believes that a lot has been done for the development of contacts, including in trade and economy. The speaker also noted that in 2016 the trade between the countries decreased slightly, but in Q1 2017 it picked up by 36%.

Vladimir Andreichenko welcomed the setting up of the friendship groups in the newly-elected parliaments of Belarus and the Republic of Korea. The speaker stressed that they need to work on a systematic basis and aim for specific results.

For his part, Ambassador Kim Yong Ho said that there has been an active high-level exchange. A series of important visits have taken place already. A memorandum has been signed with the Ministry of Communications and Informatization of Belarus to develop e-government. Other bilateral events included the investment forum and business consultations with major Korean companies.

The ambassador invited members of the House of Representatives to participate in the Second Meeting of Speakers of Eurasian Countries’ Parliaments to be held in Seoul on 26-28 June.
