Belarus invited to attend June session of SCO Council of Heads of State

MINSK, 27 April (BelTA) – Belarus has been invited to attend the session of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization that will take place in Tashkent, Uzbekistan in June. The information was released by the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs after Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei met with SCO Secretary General Rashid Alimov on 27 April, BelTA has learned.

During the meeting the SCO Secretary General shared information about the progress of organization of the session of the SCO Council of Heads of State that will take place in Tashkent in June and that Belarus has been invited to attend.

In his words, it was the first time the minister of foreign affairs of an observer country had visited the headquarters of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.

During the meeting the sides discussed Belarus’ participation in SCO events as an observer. Vladimir Makei was confident that the decision to grant observer status to Belarus in summer 2015 met interests of all the SCO member states.

The Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs is on a working visit in Beijing where he is taking part in a meeting of the ministers of foreign affairs of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA). Belarus was granted observer status in CICA in April 2015.

The Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA) is a major regional forum focusing on development and enhancement of cooperation, security, economic growth and stability in Asia. Cooperation of CICA member states focuses on priority areas such as economy, ecology, humanitarian, military and political affairs, fight against new challenges and threats (terrorism, money laundering, drugs smuggling, and trafficking in persons).

The Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA) includes 26 countries of Central and Southeast Asia, the Middle East and North Africa. Bangladesh, Lebanon, Malaysia, the United States of America, Ukraine, Philippines, and Japan enjoy observer status in CICA.
