Belarus intends to continue promoting new Helsinki Process initiative

MINSK, 14 February (BelTA) – Belarus will continue promoting the initiative to launch a new Helsinki Process. This matter was discussed at the joint session of the Standing Commission for Foreign Affairs and National Security of the Council of the Republic and Standing Commission for Foreign Affairs of the House of Representatives, BelTA has learned.

“It is important for Belarus to continue promoting the initiative put forward by the Belarusian president to launch the new Helsinki Process in the OSCE,” MP Valery Voronetsky noted. “The initiative aims to build confidence and to promote cooperation in the OSCE region,” he added.

“The initiative is very important and our efforts are aimed at promoting peace and security in the region. The initiative is of great importance not only for Europe but also for Belarus, for strengthening our positions, sovereignty, security, and independence,” Valery Voronetsky said. According to him, it will be difficult for Belarus to keep pursuing an independent and neutral policy in a number of issues in the context of growing tensions.

The standing commissions also discussed cooperation of Belarus' National Assembly with parliamentary organizations, ways of boosting the activity of parliamentary working groups with foreign colleagues. The agenda also included key events on the interparliamentary agenda in 2019. MPs and the members of the Council of the Republic have met in such a format for the first time.
