Belarus, India work out roadmap of bilateral cooperation

MINSK, 1 June (BelTA) – India and Belarus are finalizing a roadmap of bilateral relations, which will be issued during an official visit of the Indian head of state to Belarus, President of India Pranab Mukherjee said in an interview to BelTA ahead of his official visit to Belarus.

“We will be releasing a Roadmap for our relations, which will outline the major areas and the way forward to achieve the desired outcomes in each of those areas. Sectors such as conventional and small-scale power generation, new and renewable energy, metallurgy and mining, automotive and agricultural engineering, pharmaceuticals, oil and gas, agriculture and food processing have been identified as areas of high potential. We can also expand our links in a range of services such as IT, healthcare, financial services, transport and logistics,” Mr. Pranab Mukherjee said.

In his words, the current level of the trade of around $400 million between the two countries is far below potential. “We must address this and achieve much higher levels of trade and investment. Enhancing our trade and investment ties will be uppermost on the agenda for my talks with the President of Belarus. We import big volumes of potash fertilizers from Belarus, which is necessary for our food security program. Indian companies are interested in long-term potash fertilizer delivery contracts with Belarus. Thus, Belarus will get a guaranteed market and India will have a reliable supplier. Our companies are also open for investment in the Belarusian potash mines if the offered terms are commercially sound,” the President of India said.

According to the President of India, it is worth mentioning that farming methods have been changing in India and the country will need equipment that Belarus produces. It would be great if Belarusian companies set up subsidiaries or joint companies in India to meet the needs of India’s huge market. India’s mining industry is in anticipation of a new growth phase. Mr. Pranab Mukherjee expressed his confidence that it will open new opportunities for Belarusian companies, especially if they work under the Make in India principle. It will benefit both the sides. We also should think over dump truck manufacturing in India,” Mr. Pranab Mukherjee said.
