Belarus: Illegal sanctions and trade wars have to stop in order to help implement SDGs
GENEVA, 11 September (BelTA) – Illegal sanctions and trade wars have to stop in order to help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. The statement was made by Permanent Representative of Belarus to the UN Office and other international organizations in Geneva Larisa Belskaya, BelTA learned from the Belarusian permanent mission in Geneva.
The Belarusian diplomat stated it is necessary to end sanctions during a discussion forum on the right to development at the 63rd session of the UN Human Rights Council.
“The adoption of the Declaration on the Right to Development is a major milestone in international cooperation in the field of protection and promotion of human rights,” Larisa Belskaya noted. “However, 40 years after its adoption, structural inequality, the economic and technological divide only worsen and manifest themselves in new areas, including digitization and access to modern technologies while a group of developed countries drags us into theoretical discussions about the right to development.”
Belarus’ permanent representative recalled that a new process will start at the UN soon to draft the Post-2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development with recommendations on the future path of development from the perspective of human rights.
“The right to development is an inalienable human right unanimously recognized in the Vienna Declaration and Program of Action. The right to development must be taken into account and prioritized in UN strategic documents. It must be recognized as a legal obligation. Its full implementation requires taking into account national peculiarities and development priorities of sovereign states,” Larisa Belskaya stressed.
“External obstacles that hamper the development of countries and the implementation of all human rights must be eliminated. Illegal sanctions, trade wars, financial seizures, restrictions on access to innovations and investments must be stopped in order to help implement the SDGs we intend to achieve by 2030,” the Belarusian diplomat stated.
