Belarus, IAEA discuss details of upcoming SEED mission

VIENNA, 26 September (BelTA) – Belarus and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) are discussing details of the upcoming Site and External Events Design (SEED) mission that will evaluate the construction site of the Belarusian nuclear power plant (BelNPP), Belarusian Deputy Energy Minister Mikhail Mikhadyuk told reporters on the sidelines of the 60th regular session of the IAEA General Conference in Vienna, BelTA has learned.

“The SEED mission will assess the sustainability of our project taking into account the chosen construction site. The IAEA delegation will be comprised of six experts. “The SEED mission is supposed to take place in December 2016, but the final decision is up to the IAEA Secretariat,” Mikhail Mikhadyuk said. The IAEA Integrated Regulatory Review Service (IRRS) will undertake a mission to Belarus in October. The experts will conduct a comprehensive assessment of the regulatory infrastructure.

The 60th regular session of the IAEA General Conference that is underway in Vienna is summing up the results of the past year and the organization’s overall achievements over the 60 years since its inception. “It is important for us that we gain experience at the IAEA platform. In the coming days, we will hold meetings on cooperation in nuclear safety, personnel training, organization of IAEA missions, and other matters,” Mikhail Mikhadyuk said.

Mikhail Mikhadyuk will speak at the plenary meeting of the 60th session of the IAEA General Conference on 27 September. He will be talking about Belarus’ interaction with the IAEA and the promising cooperation areas.

BelTA reported earlier that Belarus intends to welcome seven IAEA assessment missions to further improve its nuclear and radiation safety infrastructure.
