Belarus hopes EU will lift sanctions soon

MINSK, 24 September (BelTA) – Belarus hopes that the EU sanctions will be lifted soon, spokesman for the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dmitry Mironchik told media on 24 September, BelTA informs.

“We hope that the authorities of the EU structures as well as the EU member states will soon understand the futility and lack of prospects of sanctions and restrictions against our country and will take the corresponding decisions to lift them in the near future, which will, in turn, clear the way for the improvement of our relations with the European Union,” said Dmitry Mironchik.

The spokesman for the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed that sanctions used as an instrument of foreign policy against any state are counter-productive and unable to bring results they are used for. Unilateral sanctions contradict the international legal norms and principles, including those in the UN Charter and the OSCE Helsinki Final Act.

“We have repeatedly stated that the decisions of the European Union to introduce restrictive measures against Belarus are unacceptable and totally wrong. One cannot speak the language of sanctions and ultimatums with a partner. Such measures are more likely to undermine the trust in the European Union than cause real damage to our country or influence the situation,” said Dmitry Mironchik.
