MINSK, 2 June (BelTA) – The online voting has put the project of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, Belarus’ Green Map, among top five in the Digital Environment nomination for the UN WSIS Prizes 2017, BelTA learned from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.

Taking part in this year’s contest were 345 projects, with Belarus submitting two works. The contest was held ahead of the World Summit on the Information Society Forum which is due in Geneva on 12-16 June. The forum is held in cooperation with the UN establishments and international organizations, including the UNECE, WIPO, UNESCO, UNICEF, UNDP, WHO, and WMO. The forum is the world's largest annual gathering to exchange information, create knowledge, share best practices, identify emerging trends and foster partnerships, taking into account the evolving information and knowledge societies.

The Belarusian delegation is expected to attend the official opening of the forum and also the ceremony to award the winners of the competition by the ITU Secretary General on 13 June. A high-level session on the same day will feature heads of national delegations presenting the national experience of implementing the latest technologies in an effort to fulfill the sustainable development goals.

The achievement of the kind at the competition is the first one for Belarus and a milestone for the country in demonstrating its contribution to the implementation of the goals set forth by the head of state in the area of sustainable development, further advancement of the information society, and the universal implementation of information technologies. The Belarus Green Map project is a vivid testimony of successful partnership of government bodies, public organizations and international community in addressing environment-oriented tasks in the country.
