Belarus, France to develop cooperation in environment

MINSK, 20 July (BelTA) - Belarus’ Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Minister Andrei Khudyk met with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of France to Belarus Didier Canesse to discuss Belarus-France cooperation in environment, BelTA learned from the website of the Belarusian ministry.

Andrei Khudyk stressed that Belarus and France have gained some experience of mutually beneficial cooperation in the field of environmental protection, including in the area of hazardous waste treatment. In 2012 the French company Tredi built a plant to destroy 823 tonnes of waste containing hazardous chemicals. This has helped Belarus to reduce the total number of wastes containing polychlorinated biphenyls by 17%. The company also participated in the international technical assistance project to eliminate the storage site of obsolete pesticides located in the village of Mizgiri, Slonim District, Grodno Oblast.

The bilateral cooperation in environment received a new impetus as the Belarusian Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection and the French Ministry of the Environment, Energy and the Sea signed an agreement on cooperation in the protection of environment and sustainable development in 2016. Andrei Khudyk noted the positive role of the joint interdepartmental working group in the development of interaction in the environmental field.

“Today Belarus has more and more new technologies, more advanced manufacturing facilities, which invariably leads to production of additional waste. France is a recognized leader in waste management and we should look up to you in this area. We would like to study your experience and practices to be able to dispose of and neutralize hazardous waste on our own in the future,” the Belarusian minister noted.

The parties also discussed cooperation between the National Center for Hydrometeorology, Control of Radioactive Pollution and Environmental Monitoring at the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of Belarus and the National Weather Service of France.

“Andrei Khudyk invited Ambassador Didier Canesse to get familiar with Belarus’ practices in regulating and developing systems of protected natural sites, visit the country’s well-known tourism spots Belovezhskaya Pushcha and the Berezinsky biosphere reserve,” the press service said.

The parties believe that the meeting would become another step towards strengthening the Belarusian-French cooperation in environmental protection.
