Belarus’ foreign ministry hosts UN rapporteur on human rights of migrants

MINSK, 21 July (BelTA) – Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus Yuri Ambrazevich has met with United Nations Organization’s special rapporteur on the human rights of migrants Felipe Gonzalez Morales to discuss the results of his three-day visit to Belarus, BelTA learned from the ministry’s press service.

The Belarusian diplomat informed the special rapporteur about Belarus’ approaches to human rights protection, including the rights of migrants, which applies to the rights and guarantees for citizens of Belarus and foreigners staying on the Belarusian territory.

“Yuri Ambrazevich emphasized openness to interaction with the special rapporteur based on long-term cooperation with the UN agencies across many dimensions of migration and refugee issues, both as part of the traditional routine operation of the UN agencies in Belarus throughout the past 30 years, and in emergency situations,” the ministry’s press service informed.

The deputy minister expressed confidence in the depoliticized and professional approach of the special rapporteur to the study of the Belarusian migration management system, migration policy instruments and their ability to protect and fulfill the rights of migrants, which have repeatedly been praised by the UN.

According to the ministry’s press service, the special rapporteur shared his impressions on the meetings and thanked for the assistance in organizing the visit. He said that he would share the official results of his visit to Belarus and Poland at a press conference that will be held online from Geneva on 28 July.

“The parties believe that the success of the efforts to make migration manageable and to combat illegal migration directly depends on the effectiveness of cooperation between the states of origin, transit and destination,” the press service of the ministry added.
