Belarus FM to attend UNGA session

MINSK, 27 September (BelTA) - Belarus’ Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei will attend the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly, Anatoly Glaz, Head of the Information and Digital Diplomacy Office, Press Secretary of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, told a press briefing in Minsk on 27 September, BelTA has learned.

According to Anatoly Glaz, the Belarusian delegation is already taking part in the session. "The head of the delegation, Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei will visit New York on 1-4 October," he said.

On 1 October Vladimir Makei will lay out Belarus’ vision on the ways of improving the UN activities, promoting the work of states in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Belarusian approach to resolving international and regional security issues, Anatoly Glaz said. "The meeting with the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres will be an important part of the minister's visit. During the meeting the parties will discuss further strengthening of cooperation between Belarus and the UN," Anatoly Glaz said.

Vladimir Makei and UN Deputy Secretary General Amina J. Mohammed will hold a thematic session on the SDGs achievements. "Vladimir Makei will present our vision of the ways to strengthen international coordination in this area. The diplomats will review the progress in the implementation of the recommendations of the Regional SDG Coordination Leaders Forum held in Minsk in February 2018," Anatoly Glaz noted.

Vladimir Makei will also open the photo exhibition "To Be the Champion: The Story of Great Victories" at the UN headquarters dedicated to the Belarusian sport, the country’s contribution to the international Olympic movement. The event will give start to a big international promotion campaign of the 2nd European Games in Minsk, one of the most important sport events of 2018.

The minister of foreign affairs is also scheduled to meet with representatives of the UN leadership and to hold bilateral talks with colleagues from other countries.
