MINSK, 4 May (BelTA) – Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei will represent Belarus at the Eastern Partnership events in Brussels on 13-14 May, BelTA learned from Anatoly Glaz, Head of the Information and Digital Diplomacy Office, Press Secretary of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“First of all, I would like to confirm that Belarus has received an invitation addressed to the Belarusian president to attend the forthcoming events in Brussels on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Eastern Partnership initiative. As for the level of the Belarusian delegation, I can say that the participation of the Belarusian president in the events is not planned. The head of state has instructed the minister of foreign affairs to represent Belarus at these events,” the official representative of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

“We have emphasized many times that Belarus is interested in the full-fledged participation in the Eastern Partnership and is actively involved in the implementation of this initiative. We consider it as a non-confrontational and pragmatic instrument to develop dialogue and mutually beneficial cooperation with the European Union,” Anatoly Glaz said.

The press secretary of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also mentioned certain achievements within the Eastern Partnership framework. He added, however, that the potential of the initiative, especially what concerns the bilateral Belarusian-European relations, is seen as still hugely untapped.

“We hope that in the near future, along the fulfillment of the main goals of the Eastern Partnership initiative, both at the multilateral and bilateral levels, conditions will be created for a visit of the head of state to Brussels,” Anatoly Glaz said.
