Belarus FM suggests discussing CIS efforts against COVID-19
Vladimir Makei

MINSK, 12 May (BelTA) – At a meeting of the CIS Foreign Ministers Council on 12 May Belarus’ Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei suggested discussing joint efforts against the COVID-19 pandemic and its consequences at the forthcoming meeting of the CIS Heads of Government Council, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The meeting of the CIS Foreign Ministers Council took place in the format of a video conference. “Despite the fact that the current difficult epidemiological situation forces us to temporarily abandon the traditional formats of meetings, it does not affect our readiness to make active efforts to prepare new conceptual documents that determine the further development of integration processes in the CIS,” said Vladimir Makei.

In his words, thanks to the well-coordinated work of expert groups, the CIS Further Development Concept through 2030 and the action plan for its implementation have been prepared for signing. The CIS Economic Development Strategy for the period through 2030 has been almost agreed upon, and its action plan enters homestretch. The draft CIS Interstate Program of Innovation Cooperation until 2030 has been approved.

“Given the challenges our countries are facing in the current turbulent epidemiological situation, I think it would be advisable to take a close look at the last two documents once again with a view to strengthening the parts related to scientific, technical and industrial cooperation in healthcare. In general, I suggest discussing in detail the joint efforts of the CIS member states to combat the COVID-19 pandemic and the ways to overcome its consequences at the upcoming meeting of the CIS Heads of Government Council,” said Vladimir Makei. Plans are in place to hold the meeting in the format of a video conference on 29 May.
