Belarus FM against new Berlin walls in Europe

Belarus FM against new Berlin walls in Europe

MINSK, 18 November (BelTA) – I hope that the common sense will prevail in the current situation and that European partners will not want to build new Berlin walls, Belarus Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei said as he gave an interview to the Belarus 1 TV channel on 17 November, BelTA has learned.

The minister said that Belarus has always advocated for removing the sanctions rhetoric from the agenda of relations with the European Union. Unfortunately, however, the actions of the partners sometimes leave us no other choice but to respond adequately to the negative steps towards our country, Vladimir Makei noted. The minister assured that the Belarusian side will find something to respond with.

“We have a sufficient set of tools to respond adequately to possible economic measures against Belarus,” the minister said. “This applies to the expediency and prospects for our cooperation with the European Commission and the European Union on nuclear energy, common fight against illegal migration, cross-border crime, drug smuggling and so on. We are working on a document on customs matters. There are a number of sensitive issues and we need to look at them.”

"We will also look at a number of humanitarian programs, which are implemented here by foreign states and non-governmental organizations, and at a number of education programs," Vladimir Makei added.

"But we do not want to resort to this. I hope that the common sense will prevail and that no one will want to build new Berlin walls in this situation," the minister said.
