Belarus, EU start implementing project to fight illegal migration

MINSK, 24 September (BelTA) – Belarus and the European Union have started implementing a project designed to fight illegal migration. The statement was made by Aleksei Begun, Head of the Citizenship and Migration Department of the Belarusian Internal Affairs Ministry, on the air of the TV channel ONT, BelTA has learned.

The official said: “This year we’ve started implementing a large trilateral project together with the European Union and the International Organization for Migration. The project is designed to prevent the growth of illegal migration, provide technical, consulting, and organizational aid to the competent agencies, which fight this phenomenon.”

In his words, the project is estimated to cost €7 million. “Over the course of four years we are going to bolster the technical potential of law enforcement agencies and the border service, enhance the state border, train personnel, and modernize the places for keeping illegal migrants. We are going to arrange a set of educational events, including the improvement of the national legislation,” specified the official.

The international technical aid project designed to help Belarus handle problems arising from the increasing flow of illegal migrants also provides for setting up temporary detention centers for foreign citizens. The European Union will provide aid to Belarus for the project via the IOM representative office in the country. The Internal Affairs Ministry will partner up with the State Border Committee of Belarus, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the UNHCR representative office in Belarus, and several Belarusian public associations, which provide aid to the most vulnerable kinds of migrants.
