Belarus, ESCAP discuss cooperation

MINSK, 10 February (BelTA) - Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Belarus to Vietnam with concurrent accreditation in Thailand Vladimir Borovikov as a Permanent Observer took part in a meeting of the Advisory Committee of Permanent Representatives and other Representatives Designated by Members of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) in Bangkok, Thailand on 9 February, BelTA learned from the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Discussions were held on topical issues related to sustainable development, cooperation in the areas of trade, investment, and public-private partnerships. The Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) was established in 1947 with a mission to address the economic and social problems of the region. ESCAP provides a variety of technical assistance, focusing on advising governments, training and synthesizing regional experiences and information through meetings, publications and cross-national communication networks. The Commission implements programs and projects to stimulate growth, improve social and economic conditions and promote the foundations of modern society. Three training and research institutions operate under its aegis, focusing on agricultural development, statistics and technology transfer.

The tasks of the commission are the promotion of interregional trade and investment, technology transfer, privatization and entrepreneurship, environmental protection, urbanization, poverty reduction, combating drug abuse, population, social development and labor migration.

On the same day Vladimir Borovikov, as a permanent observer, met with Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Secretary of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana. The parties discussed Belarus’ work in this international organization.

Talks were also held with the leadership of the relevant departments of ESCAP on Belarus’ involvement in the project activities of the organization.

During his stay in Bangkok, the ambassador paid visits to the permanent representatives of the People's Republic of China and Russia.
