Belarus elected to UNESCO Executive Board

MINSK, 9 November (BelTA) - Belarus has been elected to the UNESCO Executive Board, BelTA learned from the Belarusian embassy in France.

The 39th session of the UNESCO General Conference has been running in Paris from 30 October to 14 November. Belarus was widely supported by the UNESCO member states. In his speech ahead of the elections, Belarus’ Ambassador to France, Belarus’ Permanent Representative to the UNESCO Pavel Latushko expressed gratitude to assistance to the country in the preservation and popularization of tangible and intangible heritage, cultural diversity, cooperation in the UNESCO scientific programs.

Pavel Latushko stressed that as a member of the UNESCO Executive Board Belarus will be doing its best to enhance the role of the organization and develop cooperation both with the organization and its member states.

UNESCO is a leading international organization responsible for coordinating cooperation in education, science, and culture. The Executive Board ensures the overall management of UNESCO. It unites 58 member states. Elections to the Executive Board are held every four years. Belarus joined UNESCO in 1954 and was elected to the Executive Board for the fifth time.

Belarus placed first in the voting, being supported by 171 out of 184 states which took part in the General Conference.

“The election to the Executive Board proves Belarus’ wide recognition both in UNESCO and the international arena,” the embassy said.
