Belarus-EC discuss Belarusian-European cooperation expansion

MINSK, 22 April (BelTA) – Belarus’ Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei took part in the ministerial meeting of the Eastern Partnership (EaP) member states in Luxembourg on 20 April to discuss the preparations for the Riga summit, BelTA learnt from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“During the visit the Belarusian minister also held meetings with representatives of the European Commission, the European External Action Service, ministers of foreign affairs of the EU member states and EaP partner countries to discuss the issues of current importance and the ways to expand the Belarusian-European cooperation as well as bilateral cooperation,” said representatives of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Speaking at the plenary session of the ministerial meeting, Vladimir Makei stated Belarus’ approaches toward the development of the relations with the European Union and the country’s participation in the Eastern Partnership. Besides, he stressed the need to secure genuine equality between the European Union and the EaP partner countries, take into account their interests and focus on the applied spheres of cooperation. The minister also called for a dialogue between the EU and the Eurasian Economic Union with a view of forming the common economic space as a key element of a long-term peace and wellbeing in the region.

The EaP summit in Riga is scheduled for 21-22 May.
