Belarus eager to step up participation in SCO Energy Club

Belarus eager to step up participation in SCO Energy Club

MINSK, 30 November (BelTA) – Belarus is interested in expanding its participation in work of the Energy Club of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). Prime Minister of Belarus Roman Golovchenko made the statement during a videoconference meeting of the SCO Heads of Government Council on 30 November, BelTA has learned.

Roman Golovchenko said: “Belarus actively advances international cooperation in matters of enhancement of nuclear safety and peaceful uses of nuclear energy. We are interested in expanding the participation of our country in the work of the SCO Energy Club.”

Since the organization unites several nuclear states, Roman Golovchenko believes it is time to think about creating a dedicated procedure within the framework of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization to arrange regular meetings and conferences on nuclear energy and nuclear safety similarly to events that focus on other areas of activities. “I am convinced that the creation of such a format of interaction will meet modern challenges in the area of nuclear safety and will contribute to stronger international cooperation in this sphere,” he stressed.

The Belarusian side also believes it is necessary to set up a full-fledged financial institution that cannot be swayed by decisions and actions of Western bodies.

According to the Belarusian side, the financial institution could provide loans unrelated to investment projects and could provide stabilization loans, including for the sake of supporting development programs.

“This idea fully corresponds to the Russian initiative, which expects the SCO Interbank Association to adopt a roadmap on overcoming COVID-19 pandemic consequences for economies of the SCO member states. Taking into account considerable experience in finance and banking, the SCO Interbank Association could work out and submit a draft concept on setting up this financial institution,” Roman Golovchenko noted.
