Belarus described as regional security donor

MINSK, 6 October (BelTA) – Belarus is a security donor in its own region. Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei made the statement during the first conference of Belarus’ honorary consuls, the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs told BelTA.

Vladimir Makei said: “You can see what is going in the world and in our region. Instead of getting better or normalized the situation is getting more complicated. We talked about it during our meeting on the first day. The situation is very complicated from the point of view of economy, military political point, political point, and humanitarian point.”

“We expect you to accomplish more. We expect you to desire to accomplish something bigger. One can say that we are going to expect ever more from you. Because the negative situation in the world, in the global economy is affecting our country, too. This is why it is particularly important to ensure the progressive economic development of Belarus in these conditions. It is necessary to create so-called safety cushions. We believe that you can and should become an active part of this process,” stressed Vladimir Makei.

Vladimir Makei asked the honorary consuls to focus on the country’s best traits as they promote Belarus’ image and interests in their consular districts. “One of them is the unique role our country plays in regional security and international security in conditions of the most powerful crisis of the European and global security architectures since the end of the Cold War,” noted Vladimir Makei. “I would like you to spread the word that Belarus is not a source of some instability or problems in our region and the world. Belarus is a donor of security in its own region.”

According to Vladimir Makei, he always tries to explain to European and American partners that Belarus represents an effective barrier on the way of illegal migrants, drugs trafficking, and crime to Europe as the country is located between the East and the West.

Vladimir Makei also asked the honorary consuls to emphasize Belarus’ leadership in the fight against human trafficking. Belarus also offers reliable and uninterrupted transit of energy resources to Europe. Apart from that, over 100 million tonnes of various cargoes cross the country in transit every year. These volumes are vital for Europe. “Belarus has never posed any problems for our Western partners in this regard,” concluded the official.
