Belarus counts on Romania’s successful presidency in EU

Belarus counts on Romania’s successful presidency in EU

MINSK, 28 November (BelTA) – Belarus expects Romania’s presidency in the EU to be successful, Belarus’ Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Oleg Kravchenko said at a function held on 28 November to mark 100 years of Romania’s Great Unification, BelTA has learned.

“Next year, Romania will preside in the Council of the European Union for the first time. Bucharest will have to solve a number of difficult tasks in this capacity. Knowing about a very high professional level of Romanian diplomacy, I am sure that the presidency will be successful,” said Oleg Kravchenko.

The deputy minister expressed hope that Romania will continue to support the Eastern Partnership initiative. “Next year we will celebrate the 10th anniversary of this EU project, and together define goals for the next 10 years. Belarus considers the Eastern Partnership an important and potentially useful project. We have already started preliminary consultations with the Romanian counterparts ahead of the chairmanship and look forward to active cooperation in the first half of next year,” he noted.

Oleg Kravchenko called Romania’s position on Belarusian-European relations as responsible and constructive. As for Belarusian-Romanian contacts, joint efforts helped the two countries achieve significant progress in the development of political, economic, inter-parliamentary, interregional dialogue. The two states continue expanding relations in the cultural and humanitarian sectors. A close dialogue between the ministries of foreign affairs of the two countries is effective as well.

In turn, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Romania to Belarus Viorel Mosanu confirmed that Romania supports the EU-Belarus dialogue with a view to making progress along this path. He stressed the importance of the Eastern Partnership program.

Viorel Mosanu also touched upon the historical events which occurred a century ago, when the Great Unification of Romania took place on 1 December 1918. “It was part of the overall European fight for the independence of nations, and Romanians joined the movement,” the diplomat said. According to him, Romania has gone through a difficult path of development and is currently an economically stable state, which maintains close ties with its neighbors and looks to the future with confidence. The country develops full-fledged relations in the international arena, cooperates with other states. In recent years, contacts with Belarus have been developing most intensively. This year the two states have intensified ministerial and inter-parliamentary dialogue, trade and economic cooperation. Both countries are looking for new possibilities for engagement.
