Belarus’ Council of Republic passes statement on PACE’s resolution

MINSK, 15 February (BelTA) – The Presidium of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus passed a statement in connection with the resolution of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, BelTA learned from the press service of the upper house of parliament.

“The Presidium of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus strongly condemns the adoption by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) of the biased resolution “Legal and human rights aspects of the Russian Federation’s aggression against Ukraine” and unfounded accusations against Belarus cited in this resolution. We absolutely reject these accusations. The resolution completely distorts the essence of the conflict in Ukraine and misleads the international community about the roles of the parties involved,” the statement reads.

Throughout their history Belarus and its people bore the brunt of devastating wars that brought death, suffering and destruction. They know like no one else the price of peace. “Our country has been and remains a peace-loving state that seeks to promote friendly relations with all countries and peoples. This commitment is reaffirmed, among other things, by the specific initiatives of Belarus and its contribution to peace and security. The PACE resolution shamelessly hushed up the facts of the endless supplies of heavy weapons and lethal weapons by the countries of the collective West to Ukraine, including weapons banned by international law. This document is null and void in its essence, since it does not try to come up with solutions to resolve the conflict in Ukraine, does not call for more political and diplomatic efforts to restore peace as soon as possible,” the document reads.

“Members of the Presidium are concerned that PACE is increasingly turning from a platform for inter-parliamentary cooperation into a political instrument that creates new dividing lines and deepens the crisis of trust in interstate relations. Today, when the world is facing new challenges and threats, especially in the field of international security, the work of parliamentarians is taking on new significance,” the statement reads.

The Council of the Republic calls on international parliamentary structures to drop destructive initiatives, to focus on promoting an equal and mutually respectful inter-parliamentary dialogue in order to de-escalate international tensions and facilitate peace process in international relations for the benefit of the future of all humankind.
