Belarus continues negotiating CSTO SG appointment

Belarus continues negotiating CSTO SG appointment

MINSK, 5 March (BelTA) – Belarus continues working to address the situation with the appointment of secretary general of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), Belarus’ Vice Premier Igor Petrishenko told the media after the government session chaired by the head of state on 5 March, BelTA has learned.

“We discussed the issue. A number of instructions were given during the meeting. We will continue working on the matter so that our military political organization could get a legitimately appointed secretary general,” Igor Petrishenko said.

The head of state described the situation with the appointment of the CSTO secretary general as “unhealthy” and urged to resolve it as soon as possible. There are a number of other issues on the agenda of the organization.

As BelTA reported earlier, State Secretary of the Security Council of Belarus Stanislav Zas had been proposed as candidate for the post of the CSTO secretary general. The Belarusian candidature was already approved by Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Russia. Difficulties in the matter remain with Armenia that withdrew its representative Yuri Khatchaturov from the post ahead of time and insists on appointing its candidate.
