Belarus considering withdrawing from EaP, suspending cooperation with EU against illegal migration

MINSK, 26 May (BelTA) - Belarus is considering suspending cooperation with the European Union to combat illegal migration and organized crime, Belarus’ Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei said at the meeting in the Oval Hall of the House of the Government on 26 May, BelTA has learned.

According to the minister, restrictions may also affect political foundations, humanitarian programs and non-governmental organizations operating in Belarus.

“The well-known pranksters have recently exposed the mechanism to finance the forces meant to undermine the situation in Belarus and Russia. Given the increased sanctions pressure, our country's further participation in the Eastern Partnership (EaP) may become no longer relevant. Without Belarus, this initiative also makes no sense. We are considering other retaliation measures as well,” the minister said.

“Further escalation of the situation will not lead to anything good. Everybody will lose. This scenario has negative consequences,” Vladimir Makei is sure.

Belarus, as a responsible partner, will continue to seek ways of constructive interaction. "While European politicians seem to bear no responsibility for the fate of their citizens and the long-term interests of the states, we will rely on the interests of our peoples who have always wanted to live in peace,” he said.

“I would like to urge our European partners to come to their senses and stop attacking the sovereignty of our country. A information, economic and hybrid warfare has been unleashed against Belarus,” the minister said.
