Belarus calls to strengthen international security architecture

MINSK, 19 May (BelTA) – Belarus’ Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei took part in a session of the CSTO Foreign Ministers Council in Dushanbe, Tajikistan on 19 May, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The parties exchanged views on international and regional developments and their impact on the security of the CSTO member states. The foreign ministers pointed to the importance of closer interaction on international platforms, emphasized the need to further expand cooperation between the CSTO and other international organizations, as well as to step up efforts to enhance the role of the organization in maintaining international peace and security.

In his speech, the minister of foreign affairs of Belarus gave his take on the state of international and regional security. He pointed to persisting military and political tensions in Eastern Europe and the increased external pressure on sovereign states, including through the use of sanctions.

The foreign minister of Belarus expressed concern about the dismantling of the system of international disarmament and arms control agreements, in particular, the situation around the Treaty on Open Skies.

Vladimir Makei emphasized Belarus' readiness for an equal and mutually respectful dialogue to overcome disagreements, reduce tensions and restore confidence, including Belarus’ initiatives aimed at strengthening the international security and disarmament architecture.

The CSTO foreign ministers adopted a statement “On the 75th anniversary of the verdicts of the International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg”, a statement on the CSTO cooperation with states and international organizations, a statement in connection with the extension of the Treaty between the United States of America and the Russian Federation on Measures for the Further Reduction and Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms, a statement on strengthening the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention, and also approved decisions on the organization’s current activities.
