Belarus calls on Western neighbors to resume practical cooperation on migration

MINSK, 24 June (BelTA) - Belarus once again calls on its Western neighbors to resume dialogue and practical interaction in border management matters, Belarus’ representative said at the 38th session of the Standing Committee of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), BelTA learned from the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The representative of the Belarusian delegation emphasized that Belarus reaffirms its commitment to cooperation with the IOM and other partners in implementing the Global Compact for Migration and the Progress Declaration adopted following the second International Migration Review Forum in May of this year.
“In view of the Global Compact for Migration and the Progress Declaration and also the national Concept of Migration Policy for 2024-2028, the government and relevant state bodies will continue to strengthen the national migration system, improve legislation, develop digital data infrastructure, and implement measures to protect the rights of migrants, including labor migrants,” the diplomat stated.
He noted that Belarus attaches particular importance to addressing the root causes of illegal migration, including inequality, conflicts, and the consequences of unilateral coercive measures, which negatively affect sustainable development and human rights. The country is also committed to cooperation aimed at saving human lives and preventing the death and injury of migrants.
“Belarus once again calls on its Western neighbors to resume dialogue and practical interaction in border management matters. Belarus remains a firm adherent of the Global Compact for Migration and a reliable partner of the IOM, faithfully fulfilling its financial obligations to the organization. We support the IOM’s approach that migration management requires practical, balanced, and cooperation-based approaches, and that isolated national actions cannot effectively ensure safe, orderly, and legal migration,” Belarus’ representative said.
As priority areas of cooperation, the Belarusian side sees strengthening national capacity in the field of safe, orderly, and legal migration, combating human trafficking and protecting its victims, and improving labor migration policy.
“Belarus highly values the expert and technical support of the IOM. We count on the continuation of constructive cooperation in the new context of the transformation of the IOM’s presence in Belarus,” the diplomat concluded.
