Belarus calls on SCO member states to unite efforts against terrorism, crime

BISHKEK, 3 November (BelTA) – Belarus is ready to interact with the member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in the field of security, Belarus’ Prime Minister Andrei Kobyakov said at the 15th meeting of the SCO Heads of Government Council in Bishkek on 3 November, BelTA has learned.

According to Andrei Kobyakov, the previous year showed that the cooperation between security services and law-enforcement agencies was as relevant as ever. This is true for all the countries without exception. “Belarus is ready to develop cooperation against international terrorism and cybercrime, illegal trafficking of drugs and psychotropic substances across the borders of the SCO member states. All these negative phenomena are cross-border problems. Only by joint efforts can we fight them efficiently,” the Prime Minister said.

As a member state of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), Belarus advocates consistent expansion of cooperation between the CSTO and the SCO Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure in promoting security and stability, including the information exchange, counteraction to religious extremism and illegal migration.

“I believe that the participation of the State Secretaries of the Security Councils of the observer countries in the SCO annual meetings would contribute to the joint discussion of the aforementioned issues,” Andrei Kobyakov said.

Development of the inter-agency cooperation is also promising. “Belarus’ Emergencies Ministry is ready to join the disaster management efforts under the auspices of the SCO in 2017,” Andrei Kobyakov said.

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization is an international regional organization that consists of six member states: China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and six observers: Afghanistan, Belarus, India, Iran, Mongolia and Pakistan. Belarus was granted an observer status at the SCO summit in Ufa, Russia on 10 July 2015. In 2011-2015 Belarus participated in the SCO activities in the capacity of a dialogue partner.
