Belarus, Bulgaria eager to make up for lost time in bilateral relations

MINSK, 6 February (BelTA) – Belarus and Bulgaria have agreed to make up for the lost time in the bilateral relations, Belarus Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei told journalists following the talks with his Bulgarian counterpart Ekaterina Zakharieva in Sofia on 6 February, BelTA has learned.

Vladimir Makei said that during his meetings with Bulgaria’s senior officials both the parties showed interest in enhancing the level of contacts and stepping up cooperation in bilateral and multilateral formats in all areas.

“Moreover, we had to admit that in the past years, unfortunately, we underestimated the importance of close cooperation between our countries. We have agreed to do everything to make up for the lost time in the coming years,” Vladimir Makei said.

Belarus sees prospects for advancing relations in manufacturing, agriculture, information technology, and cooperation in investment, science and technology. The parties agreed to continue work to organize another session of the intergovernmental commission on cooperation in trade and economy, science and technology and to hold meetings of the working groups on science and technology, agriculture, transport, education, tourism, and other areas in the near future.

“We also see good prospects for intensifying regional cooperation that has a solid basis as Belarusian and Bulgarian cities and regions signed more than 40 agreements,” Vladimir Makei stressed.

He hopes that the cooperation between the countries will be taken to a higher level. Vladimir Makei believes that both the countries are willing to do this.

BelTA reported earlier that the Belarusian minister of foreign affairs is in Bulgaria on the first official visit in the history of bilateral relations. Vladimir Makei also met with Bulgarian President Rumen Radev, Chairperson of the Bulgarian National Assembly Tsveta Karayancheva, and representatives of Bulgarian business.
