Belarus attends Human Rights Council session in Geneva

MINSK, 15 March (BelTA) – It is counterproductive to use country-specific special procedures to achieve progress in human rights, Larisa Belskaya, the head of the main directorate of multilateral diplomacy at the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said when speaking in the round of dialogues of the 34th Human Rights Council session on human rights situations in specific countries, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Belarusian diplomat noted that using country-specific special procedures to achieve progress in the field of human rights is counterproductive. A growing number of such procedures drain the UN financial and human resources, do not contribute to the efforts of developing countries to fulfill their human rights commitments, to build the capacity and, ultimately, to achieve the sustainable development goals and the stability of states and societies,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

Belarus’ representative underlined the role of the Universal Periodic Review in the objective consideration of the human rights situations worldwide.
