MINSK, 21 April (BelTA) – Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Worship of Argentina Susana Malcorra expressed support towards establishing closer cooperation between the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) and the Mercosur (the South American common market) at a meeting in New York on 20 April, BelTA learnt from the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

During the meeting the parties paid special attention to the bilateral relations and the ways to expand cooperation between Belarus and Argentina, first of all in the economic, investment and trade sectors. “In particular, the parties discussed the ways to develop bilateral economic cooperation, including through the setting up of joint manufacturing facilities for a wider and more efficient use of the potential and market opportunities of the big trading unions which Belarus and Argentina make part of: EEU and Mercosur,” the press service of the ministry noted.

The parties also reached a number of agreements. The ministers agreed to hold a meeting of the joint commission on trade and economic cooperation in Minsk in H2 2016. The heads of the foreign political departments also agreed on a mutual exchange of visits with a view to maximally promote trade and economic cooperation between the two countries.

Vladimir Makei and Susana Malcorra also touched upon global foreign political issues. The Argentinean Minister of Foreign Affairs emphasized the role and place of Minsk in the recent efforts to strengthen peace and security in the region.

Vladimir Makei met with his Argentinean counterpart during his working visit to New York. He is leading the Belarusian delegation at the high-level events in the UN headquarters on 20-22 April.
