Belarus against stepping up military activity in region

MINSK, 12 November (BelTA) – Belarus is opposed to the escalation of any military activity in the region, BelTA learned from Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei on 12 November.

Vladimir Makei commented on the statement made by the NATO military, who said that allegedly Belarus could team up with the Russian army group in Kaliningrad to capture some Suwalki corridor and isolate the Baltic states from the rest of their allies in NATO. The Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs dismissed such accusations as absurd.

The official stressed that any efforts to step up military activities on both sides of the Belarus-EU border, including the deployment of more troops and hardware, will result in stronger military tensions. It is absolutely unnecessary in current conditions particularly in view of the situation in Ukraine, added Vladimir Makei. “We cannot stifle the smoldering Ukrainian conflict. Adding more wood to the fire of the Ukrainian crisis would be absolutely irrational,” stressed the Minister.

The Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs reminded that Belarus’ stance on matters of war and peace had been repeatedly outlined by Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko: no threat to peace will originate from the Belarusian territory.
