MINSK, 23 July (BelTA) - A law “On the accession of the Republic of Belarus to the Council of Europe Convention on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings” was published on the national legal web portal on 23 July, BelTA has learnt.
This means that the Belarusian side ended a domestic procedure relating to the accession to the instrument. All in all, about 40 countries are parties to the Convention.
The Council of Europe Convention on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings was adopted in Poland’s capital Warsaw on 16 May 2005. The document is meant to protect the rights of the victims of human trafficking, facilitate effective investigation in such cases and prosecute those guilty. One more objective of the Convention is to bolster international cooperation in combating such crimes which has become one of the most profitable activities on a par with illegal drug trafficking.
Belarusian MPs adopted the law on the accession of the Republic of Belarus to the Convention in late June 2013. According to them, being party to the Convention will not be a burden for Belarus. The yearly contribution is relatively low, €6,900. This money will go to the budget of the Group of Experts on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings.
