Ambassador: SCO membership will enable Belarus to take part in many projects
Ambassador Yuri Senko

MINSK, 25 July (BelTA) – Membership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) is an opportunity for Belarus to participate in many projects, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Belarus to China Yuri Senko said in an interview to the ONT TV channel, BelTA has learned.

“It is a huge market and it is a great opportunity to participate in many projects, currently implemented within the Shanghai Cooperation Organization,” Yuri Senko said speaking about Belarus’ prospects of joining the organization as a full member.

According to the ambassador, Belarus has been an observer in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization since 2010. “The initiative will be approved in Uzbekistan in September. This will be the beginning of all the procedures that mean gaining full membership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization,” he said.

Belarus-China highest-level negotiations are expected in September in this regard, said Yuri Senko. “We are waiting for the decision. The course of events is showing that such negotiations are likely to take place if nothing impedes them. We hope that the pandemic will not be a constraint for this,” he said.

The SCO is a regional international association founded in June 2001. The organization includes nine countries: Russia, India, Iran, China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
