PARIS, 26 February (BelTA) – UNESCO will support new projects on cooperation with Belarus, UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova said as she received credentials from Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Belarus to France, Belarus’ permanent representative in UNESCO Pavel Latushko on 25 February, BelTA has learnt.
“I will support every initiative to make Belarus’ presence in UNESCO even more solid,” Irina Bokova said.
On behalf of the Belarusian government, Pavel Latushko invited Irina Bokova to pay an official visit to Belarus. The UNESCO Director General accepted the invitation.
Pavel Latushko addressed the Director General with a proposal to support Belarus’ initiative on including the celebrations of the 250th anniversary of Michal Kleofas Oginski and the 200th anniversary of Iosif Goshkevich into the UNESCO calendar for 2014-2015.
Irina Bokova stressed that she endorses the initiative. The final decision on it will be taken at the UNESCO general conference in November.
Irina Bokova was presented with Yakub Kolas’ poem New Land with the illustrations of People’s Artist of Belarus Vasily Sharangovich. The book was published by the Belarusian Cultural Fund. Pavel Latushko also presented the UNESCO Director General with the original of one of the illustrations, an artwork Busly (Storks).
