UNESCO seen as unique platform for Belarus to promote national achievements

MINSK, 23 May (BelTA) – UNESCO is a unique platform for Belarus to promote national achievements in science, culture, education, and information, Belarus Vice Prime Minister Igor Petrishenko said at an extended session of the National Commission for UNESCO timed to the 65th anniversary of Belarus’ membership in this organization on 23 May, BelTA has learned.

“UNESCO is an important partner of our country in addressing social and cultural challenges and a unique platform for promoting national achievements in science, culture, education, and information,” Igor Petrishenko said.

He recalled that Belarus is actively implementing projects to ensure the conservation and efficient use of world cultural heritage, to explore and structure the archives and library collections, catalog and digitize unique printed materials. Belarus is represented in all UNESCO world heritage lists. “We are proud of the fact that our country is home to four UNESCO World Heritage sites: Belovezhskaya Pushcha, Struve Geodetic Arc, Mir Castle and Nesvizh Castle. These objects is the country’s weighty contribution to the world treasure trove. They are of great interest to researchers and the general public,” the vice premier said.

Belarus has a well-developed network of UNESCO chairs and associated schools which teach young people UNESCO ideals and values, promote inter-school ad inter-university cooperation, implement projects in artistic and aesthetic education, training programs for various categories of the population, hold conferences on informatization of education.

“Belarus’ humanitarian potential, its diverse cultural heritage are the key to the further fruitful joint activities with the organization. Nezavisimosti (Independence) Avenue in Minsk, the Augustow Canal, the unique Belarusian rites, domestic innovations in fundamental and applied science, medicine should become shared assets,” Igor Petrishenko noted.

The vice premier wished Belarus National Commission for UNESCO every success in their work on the conservation and enrichment of the world heritage and raising the country's profile in the international arena.
