UNDP identifies Belarus’ sustainable development engines

MINSK, 6 June (BelTA) – Green economy, an effective industrial model, digital transformation, inclusive society and other engines of the sustainable development of Belarus were mentioned by Zachary Taylor, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative in Belarus, during the regional conference on sustainable development in Minsk on 6 June, BelTA has learned.

Zachary Taylor said: “The forum represents an excellent opportunity for sketching out promising avenues of Belarus’ sustainable development. Sectoral work is one of them. Various levers of the national economy can be utilized. For instance, Belarus has a very strong production sector. It can be used to create a stable and effective industrial model. Many sustainable development engines are mentioned by the report of the recent UN MAPS [Mainstreaming, Acceleration and Policy Support] mission. For instance, adherence to green principles. By the way, we are happy we’ve been able to support Belarus in its transition to a green economy. The created green jobs will play a key role in the future.”

Zachary Taylor also mentioned digital transformation as an area, which gives a lot of advantages to Belarus. “It is now necessary to connect the available high-tech assets with manufacturing processes. The UNDP also welcomes focus on future generations. Young people are leaders of future companies and enterprises, which operation will rely on sustainable development principles. It is now necessary to take care of their health, education, and the ability to adapt,” noted the UNDP deputy resident representative.

Among other areas outlined by the MAPS mission Zachary Taylor singled out efforts to increase the motivation of small and medium businesses to participate in SDG achievement processes, form an inclusive society, and secure gender equality by enabling conditions conducive to the full realization of the potential of women.

The regional conference Strategies and Partnership for Reaching the SDGs is scheduled to take place in the Johannes Rau International Center for Education and Exchange in Minsk (IBB Minsk) on 6-7 June. Taking part in the event are 270 people representing government agencies, the private sector, public organizations and initiatives from Belarus and Germany, and international organizations.
